The following is the formula we use to calculate the amount of ton's
you will need to fulfill your job.
- Length x Width = "X" / 27= "X" (Cubic Yards)
- Now you have the amount of cubic yards figured out, you must figure out the compaction of the material desired.
- Take your Cubic Yards and then multiply it by the following: If you want Dirt or Sand multiply by (1.5)-- If you want Gravel multiply by (1.8)--- If you want White Rock multiply it by (2.2)
- This number will give you the amount of tons needed per 1 foot of material. So, If you take your final number from above and Divide by 12(12in.= 1ft.) and multiply it by however thick you want your material.
EXAMPLE: I have a 500 foot long driveway and is 12 foot wide. I take
500x12= 6000 /27= 222 Cubic yards. I want White Rock, so I multiply 222(Cubic
Yards) x 2.2(Compaction)= 488 ton / 12 (12" in 1 foot) = 41 tons. I want my
driveway 2" thick so I multiply 41 x 2 = 82 ton.
